It's true! 

If you don't believe it, all you have to do is recall the O.J. Simpson trial. The prosecution called a slew of expert witnesses. Each had impeccable qualifications in his or her field. There were PhD's all over the place. The number of articles written by some of those folks and published in learned journals seemed to total in the hundreds. An impressive display of expertise. 

Then it was the defense's turn at bat. They also called a slew of expert witnesses. Each also had impeccable qualifications in his or her field. Again there were PhD's all over the place. And again the number of articles written by some of those folks and published in learned journals also seemed to total in the hundreds. An equally impressive display of expertise. 

And what was the result? The inferences made by the second group were the opposite of those of the first group although the members of both groups examined the same stuff. 

And it's not just in courts of law that we find equal and opposite experts. Try the stock market, economics, politics, sports, the theatre, education, history, psychology, you name it. 

What does all that say, now? Well, I can tell you what it says to me. 

First, as Gertrude Stein might have said, “An expert is an expert is an expert.” 

And second, that anyone with an entrepreneurial bent could make a bundle by starting a “Rent-an-Expert” business that would supply customers with qualified experts who think like the customers think in virtually any field. 

Now I'm not talking about buying experts. In my opinion, many of them cannot be bought. What I am talking about is matching up independent, principled, highly-regarded-by-their-peers people with individuals and companies needing experts to champion a particular position or cause. 

Ah yes, who says this isn't the land of opportunity?
