On peace of mind
it seems that the older I get, the more astonished I am at things going on around me.

For example, someone on radio or TV says something that's totally devoid of meaning. “America is the land of racial injustice.” Or “Pessimism descended on Wall Street like a pall today.”

In essence, each of these statements is nothing more than a string of noises.

What astonishes me is what people allow such noises to do to them. Make them angry, hostile, worried, fearful, anxious. Emotions that wreak havoc with relationships, with health, with the ability to think clearly and rationally.

And all because they think those noises have something to do with them. They don't.

Now if you're one of these people, let's see if I can help you.

Late tonight, go to your window. Look up at the stars, the moon, wisps of clouds, perhaps. Completely empty your mind. Try to get a sense of wonder at what you're experiencing — the majesty of the heavenly bodies, the stillness all around you, the stillness in your mind. When you've achieved that state, recall either one of the statements I used at the beginning of this piece. Or any statement that you heard today that caused you to be agitated. See what it says to you at that moment. Note the sudden unimportance of it all.

Try it. Who knows? It might be just what you need to gain an understanding of what the writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes probably meant by, “God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.” If you do gain that understanding, it'll change you. And you'll grow. Now tell me, isn't that what you're here for?

Think about it.

If you believe that it is, click on the image to the left. (Don't worry, doing so isn't going to lock you into anything.) If you don't believe that it is, then I can't help you. No one can. But remember, you only get one shot at life. And if that one shot is spent in unhappiness, frustration, under continual stress, in poor health, and so on, well, it's your own bloody fault for not doing anything about it.
