On what passes for mind-reading

that people can read other people's minds never fails to amaze me.

For example, in murder cases, the prosecution must always come up with a likely motive if the jury is to buy its argument. Now how anyone can know why someone took a life is beyond me.

Then there's the hate crime. How in the world one can know that A hated B just because he beat him up, but didn't hate C who he also beat up ?

And how many times have you heard someone say, “Oh yeah? Well, I know what you're thinking”?

And not only do people claim to know what other living people are thinking. They also claim to know what other dead people were thinking. If you don't believe that, read just about any history book.

And there are also people who claim to know why other people voted the way they did; bought or sold securities when they did; why certain companies succeeded while others failed; why the Federal Reserve Board raised, or lowered, interest rates; and why Smith beat Jones for governor.

And if that weren't enough, there are people who claim to know how others should spend their money, raise their children, and treat their parents. Or that Clarence Thomas lied about Anita Hill. Or that Anita Hill lied about Clarence Thomas. Or that OJ did it. Or that OJ didn't do it.

Mighty impressive!

One thing I don't understand, though. The Bible says that ye shall know them by their fruits. With all this mind-reading and omniscience going on, why is the world in such terrible shape?

Maybe George Bernard Shaw was right when he said that the world would be a paradise if everyone would just mind his or her own business.

Think about it.

If you believe that it is, click on the image to the left. (Don't worry, doing so isn't going to lock you into anything.) If you don't believe that it is, then I can't help you. No one can. But remember, you only get one shot at life. And if that one shot is spent in unhappiness, frustration, under continual stress, in poor health, and so on, well, it's your own bloody fault for not doing anything about it.
