was an item in today’s
edition of the New York Poltergeist that caught my eye as I
scanned the front page. The headline was "Missing Page Found From
Carter Diary."
It seems that the
much-publicized missing page from Jimmy Carter’s diary
finally surfaced yesterday.
It starts out
with, "Rough day. Almost blew the peace
process."
It then goes
on to describe a meeting that Carter had with Anwar Sadat
and Menachem Begin. They were apparently laying the groundwork for
coming meetings when Carter tried to impose a speech code upon the
other two. Both Sadat and Begin blew up and threatened to walk
out.
"If I want to
call Anwar the ignorant son of a half-breed camel whose
mother was a camp follower in the days of Farouk, that’s between me
and Anwar," said the Israeli Prime Minister.
"Damn
right," added the Egyptian President. "And if I want to
call Menachem a money-grubbing, greedy, son of a leprous pawn
broker, that’s no one’s business but ours."
Apparently taken
aback by this response, Carter explained that he was only
trying to help structure the dialogue between the two so that
neither one’s sensitivities would be violated. After all, he said,
speech codes are imposed on college students in America all the time
to serve the same purpose.
At which
point both Sadat and Begin howled derisively.
"First of
all," Begin said when he had stopped laughing, "We’re not
exactly kids, you know. So you can’t muscle us the way you muscle
your students."
Sadat then chimed
in with "I couldn’t agree more." He then added. "We
Israelis and Egyptians prefer violating each other’s sensitivities
to killing each other. But you foolish Americans prefer to do just
the opposite. And you call yourselves peacemakers.
Fooey!"
End of
article.
No wonder Jimmy
tried to bury it.
Think about it.
